Social Support and Quality of Life in Korean Immigrant Elderly People in the United States
Kim Hyun-Joo

Abstract
With progressively increasing proportions of the elderly people the magnitude of problems in elderly people is getting more and more important. The nature of the problems are complex having not only health-related aspects but familial, social, economic, and psychological aspects. First generation immigrant elderly people have additional problems such as language and loneliness. Such limitations of social support further decrease quality of life in old age. To investigate the relationship between social support and quality of life in Korean immigrant elderly people in the United States the author surveyed 73 elderly people living in Houston Texas from April to June 2006. Data analysis was done with SPSS Windows. Many parameters of quality of life, such as activity of daily life, self care, pain and discomfort, and wellbeing, were significantly related to the degree of social support. Further studies and development of measures to improve social support are needed to enhance the quality of life in immigrant elderly people in the United States.
